Free Government Cyber Security Scorecard Tool For Schools

From today, all schools can access a new Department for Education (DfE) cyber security tool that’s designed to measure the robustness of their online security.

Piloted Now For Launch Next Year

First announced in March by Schools minister Nick Gibb, the new ‘Cyber Secure’ tool is being piloted (the pilot is open to all schools) between September 16 and October 9 in the hope that it can be launched early next year.

Free and Anonymous Assessment

The ‘Cyber Secure’ self-assessment tool is free, and allows schools make an anonymous assessment of their security levels through a grading system of 0 to 5.

Like many businesses, schools are now dependent upon technology, but the education sector was subjected to increased targeting by ransomware during the pandemic (70 attacks). Also, back in 2020, the NCSC reported that cyber attacks had led to the loss of school financial records, students’ coursework, and Covid-19 testing data.

Back in March, Nick Gibb said he wanted to introduce the tool to help schools to “be proactive and on the front foot to improve their cyber resilience” and to be able to “measure their own levels of cyber security” in order to “provide valuable signposting to a range of advice and guidance that schools can use to make positive changes to their technology environments.”
